Fine Lines And Wrinkles

As our skin ages, fine lines and wrinkles naturally start to appear. The development of lines and wrinkles is mainly due to the loss of collagen and elastic tissue in the skin. The other contributing factor in the development of wrinkles is muscle movement. When we make facial expression like smile or frown, the movement of certain facial muscles pulls against the aged skin, causing lines to appear.

Excessive exposure to sunlight is the most important factor which speeds up the ageing of the skin. Smoking is another factor. The process of skin ageing is believed to start as early as the 30s. Although the signs of ageing are not noticeable then, it would be good to start taking preventative measures such as using a good quality sunscreen regularly. Skin care products that contain antioxidants and vitamin A/ retinoids can also help to delay the signs of ageing.

Below are some commonly asked questions about ageing skin:

What treatments are effective for fine lines, wrinkles and for bringing about a more refreshed appearance?

A combination of neuromuscular relaxant, fillers, lasers can help to minimise fine lines, wrinkles and bring about a more refreshed, rejuvenated appearance.

When we make facial expressions like smile or frown, the movement of certain facial muscles result in the appearance of wrinkles. The wrinkles that form during facial expressions are called dynamic wrinkles. Neuromuscular relaxant can be used to relax specific facial muscles. Once these muscles are relaxed, these dynamic wrinkles do not form and new lines are also prevented from developing. Neuromuscular relaxant is very effective for: forehead lines, glabella frown lines, crow’s feet (smile lines around the eyes); bunny lines(nasal scrunch), facial contouring(square jaw).

As we age, our face also loses its facial fat and volume. Fillers can be used to effectively replace volume and restore a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance. Fillers can also help to fill and smoothen out certain facial lines and wrinkles. Commonly, areas such as the nasolabial folds( lines along the sides of the nose), marionette lines ( lines that run from the sides of the lips to the chin), glabella ( the groove in between the eyebrows),  tear trough ( the hollow just below the eyes) can be treated. Fillers can also be used to add volume to the cheeks, chin and lips.

What is the difference between fillers & Neuromuscular relaxant?

Neuromuscular relaxant and fillers are very different products.

Neuromuscular relaxant is a natural purified protein that relaxes muscles that form wrinkles, creating a younger appearance. The active ingredient is derived from bacteria in much the same way penicillin is derived from mould. It is manufactured in sterile condition.

At W skin and laser clinic, we use mainly hyaluronic acid type fillers. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance found in our skin and body. In the skin, the main function of hyaluronic acid is to hydrate and add volume to the skin.

How long does Neuromuscular relaxant and Fillers last?

Neuromuscular relaxant generally lasts for 4-6 months. The duration of fillers depends on the type of filler used. Most hyaluronic acid fillers last for 12 to 18 months.
